The European Union watchdogs fined Apple and Meta for violating digital competition rules. Apple was fined 500 million euros for preventing app makers from directing users to cheaper options outside of its App Store, while Meta was fined 200 million euros for forcing users to choose between personalized ads or paying to avoid them. The fines were issued under the EU's Digital Markets Act, which aims to give consumers and businesses more choice and prevent Big Tech companies from dominating digital markets. Both Apple and Meta indicated they would appeal the decisions. The commission defended its actions, saying they are agnostic to the nationality of the companies and that all companies must play by the rules in the European Union. Apple and Meta were accused of taking away free choice from their users and were required to change their behavior. Apple accused the commission of unfairly targeting the company, while Meta claimed the Commission was attempting to handicap successful American businesses while allowing Chinese and European companies to operate under different standards. Overall, the fines represent a significant step in the EU's efforts to regulate Big Tech companies and ensure fair competition in the digital market.
