The release of the remaining files related to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy Jr. by the Trump administration on Tuesday fulfills a long-standing promise by President Donald Trump to declassify these documents. The files include investigative reports, memos, communications, and other documents related to the government's investigation into Kennedy's death on November 22, 1963 in Dallas, Texas. President Trump signed an executive order in January directing the release of these remaining JFK files, which were posted to the National Archives and Record Administration's website on Tuesday evening. The release of these documents follows Trump's previous authorization of the release of tens of thousands of documents related to Kennedy's assassination during his first term. President Joe Biden's administration also declassified thousands of documents related to the assassination, with Biden's press secretary stating that 99 percent of records associated with Kennedy's assassination were available for public consumption by July 2023. The JFK Records Act of 1992 mandated the release of all records related to the assassination by October 26, 2017, with Trump citing concerns about national security risks before beginning to declassify the files. In his January executive order, Trump stated that the release of these records was long overdue and in the public interest. In addition to the JFK files, Trump's executive order also called for the release of all records in the Federal Government's possession pertaining to the assassinations of Senator Robert F. Kennedy and the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
