The wildfire in Ocean Township, Lakewood, and Lacey Township in New Jersey has caused mandatory evacuations and significant traffic impacts. The fire, which started at the Greenwood Forest Wildlife Management Area, has threatened over 1,300 structures and forced 3,000 people to evacuate. Despite the efforts of firefighters, the wildfire has burned 3,200 acres and is only 5% contained.
Emergency officials have closed several roads, including Rt. 532, Bryant Road, and Jones Road, due to the fire. Jersey Central Power & Light reported that over 25,000 customers were without power at one point due to the wildfire.
Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries so far, and officials have deployed a helicopter and a plane to help contain the fire. However, the safety of firefighters, crews, and the public remains a top priority, and restoration of power will be determined based on safety considerations.
Officials have also issued a reminder for people not to fly drones in fire zones, as these can interfere with firefighting efforts. Residents in the affected areas are urged to stay informed and follow any evacuation orders or safety instructions issued by authorities.
