DUBLIN, Ireland: The number of new homes built in Ireland dropped by 6.7 percent last year compared to 2023, according to data released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO). In total, 30,330 new homes were completed in 2024. The figures reveal a notable decline in apartment completions, which fell by 24.1 percent to 8,763 units. The construction of single dwellings also decreased slightly, with 5,367 units built, marking a 2.2 percent drop from the previous year. Despite these decreases, housing schemes showed some growth, with 16,200 homes completed-an increase of 4.6 percent compared to 2023.

Scheme dwellings accounted for the majority of completions in 2024 at 53.4 percent, followed by apartments at 28.9 percent and single dwellings at 17.7 percent. Geographically, over half (54.1 percent) of the total housing completions were concentrated in Dublin and the Mid-East region, which includes Kildare, Louth, Meath, and Wicklow. The Local Electoral Area with the highest number of new homes completed was Donaghmede in Dublin, where 1,178 homes were built, including 500 in the final quarter of the year. Seasonally adjusted data shows a sharper downturn toward the end of 2024, with new dwelling completions falling by 17.4 percent from the third to the fourth quarter.
