Telecom News: PMO has issued an important directive to the Telecom Department regarding Mobile SIM Card. Know what it is and what will be the benefit of it.

New SIM Card Rule: The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has issued an important directive to the Department of Telecom (DoT), making Aadhaar-based biometric verification mandatory for all new SIM card (SIM Card News) connections. The move is aimed at preventing the increasing misuse of mobile connections obtained through fake documents. It is often used for fraud and many criminal activities.

New SIM Card Rule

Earlier, users could use any government ID, such as Voter ID or Passport, to get a new mobile connection. However, according to the report, under the new rules, biometric verification through Aadhaar is now required to activate all new SIM cards. Retailers will not be able to sell SIM cards without following this process.

Government’s strictness on fake SIM cards

This decision has been taken after the recent review meeting of the telecom sector, which revealed that fake SIM cards have a role in financial scams. Investigations revealed instances where multiple SIM cards were connected to the same device, violating telecom rules and promoting cyber crime.

Strict action will be taken

The PMO has directed the Telecom Department to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and leverage AI tools to identify and punish offenders. Retailers issuing SIM cards using fake documents will face strict action.

The strict guidelines are in line with the government’s commitment to maintain the security of mobile networks and protect citizens from fraud. Aadhaar-based biometric verification is now a non-negotiable requirement for obtaining new SIM cards, setting a precedent for secure telecom operations.
