Measles cases continue to rise in the United States, with three more states confirming their first cases of the year over the weekend. Louisiana, Virginia, and Missouri all reported their first cases, with each patient having a recent history of international travel. In Louisiana, an unvaccinated adult in the greater New Orleans area was confirmed to have measles. The patient is currently in isolation at a local hospital. In Virginia, a child under the age of 4 with recent international travel history was diagnosed with the disease. Missouri also confirmed its first case, a child with unknown vaccination status who had traveled internationally. Health officials in all three states are working to identify and notify those who may have come into contact with the infected individuals. Overall, at least 27 states have reported measles cases this year, with a total of 800 confirmed cases in the country. The majority of patients are unvaccinated or have an unknown vaccination status. With nearly 600 cases, Texas is the most affected state. The CDC reports that 85 patients have been hospitalized and there have been three deaths associated with the disease this year. This outbreak is the largest since 2000 when measles was declared eliminated from the United States.
