“Conclave,” “Nosferatu,” and “Wicked” won honors at the 28th Art Directors Guild (IATSE Local 800) Excellence in Production Design Awards, Saturday at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown. The ADG divides live-action features into three categories. Production designer Craig Lathrop’s work on early 1800s-set horror adaptation “Nosferatu” won the award in the period film category. Production designer Nathan Crowley’s work on the futuristic “Wicked” won in the fantasy film category. While production designer James Chinlund took home the award for contemporary film for his work on the Vatican drama “Conclave.”
The awards ceremony, hosted by Kelly McCreary, celebrated the outstanding work of production designers, art directors, and set decorators in various categories of film and television. The event also honored Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Stuart Wurtzel, who has worked on iconic films such as “Hannah and Her Sisters” and “Angels in America.”
Other winners from the night included the television categories, where “The Mandalorian,” “The Queen’s Gambit,” and “The Crown” were recognized for their exceptional production design. The ADG Awards are considered a precursor to the Academy Awards, as the winners often go on to receive Oscar nominations for their work.
The Art Directors Guild represents 2,800 members who work in film, television, and other media. The guild’s mission is to promote the highest standards of excellence in production design and to protect the rights of its members. The ADG Awards are just one way the guild recognizes and celebrates the talented artists working behind the scenes in the entertainment industry.
