India Meteorological Department predicts severe thunderstorm and strong winds

New Delhi, June 15 (SocialNews.XYZ) After a prolonged spell of scorching temperatures, residents of the national capital finally received a gradual respite from the heatwave conditions early Sunday. Several parts of the city experienced light rainfall, thunderstorm, and strong winds, bringing relief to the sweltering heat.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of a severe thunderstorm and strong winds for Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), advising residents to stay indoors to stay safe during the extreme weather conditions.

According to the IMD, the capital witnessed a moderate to intense spell of rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and squally winds reaching speeds of 80-100 kmph during the early hours of Sunday.

Two thundersqualls, accompanied by hailstorm activity, were recorded at Safdarjung during the early morning hours, with gusty winds reaching up to 104 kmph, as reported by the IMD.

The weather department has urged residents to take necessary precautions and avoid unnecessary travel to ensure their safety during the severe weather conditions.

The Safdarjung observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 41.2 degrees Celsius on Friday, marking a slight dip from the previous day but still remaining above normal. The minimum temperature also remained high at 31.0 degrees Celsius, making conditions hot and uncomfortable throughout the day.

IMD officials have forecast generally cloudy skies with light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, dust storms, and lightning in Delhi till June 19, with gusty winds expected during thunderstorms.

After a red alert for extreme heatwave conditions, the capital is now expected to experience relief from the intense heat with the possibility of thunderstorms and rain bringing down the temperatures.

The IMD's extended range forecast indicates the southwest monsoon's likely advancement over central and eastern India, including Delhi, between June 19 and 25, earlier than the normal arrival date of around June 30.

This year, the monsoon arrived in Kerala and Mumbai ahead of schedule, signaling its early progress across the country. The monsoon is expected to bring relief to various parts of India, including Delhi, from the scorching heat.
