Delhi hits peak power demand of 8,231 MW as heatwave intensifies

New Delhi, Jun 12 (PTI) - The capital city of Delhi recently experienced its highest peak power demand of this summer on June 11, reaching a peak of 8,231 MW at 10.55 pm, according to real-time data from the State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC).

This year, Delhi is projected to surpass a peak power demand of 9,000 MW, following the record peak demand of 8,656 MW in 2024. The city first crossed the 8,000 MW mark in 2023, highlighting the increasing energy needs of the growing metropolis.

A red alert was issued for Delhi as it grappled with an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring between 40.9 to 45 degrees Celsius at various weather stations. The heat index, a measure of perceived temperature factoring in humidity, reached a concerning 51.9 degrees Celsius.

At 5.30 pm on the same day, Ayanagar registered the highest temperature at 45 degrees Celsius, with Palam following closely at 44.5 degrees Celsius. Other areas such as Ridge, Pitampura, Lodi Road, Mayur Vihar, and Safdarjung also experienced scorching temperatures.
