(1) Jannik Sinner vs. (2) Alexander Zverev
Sinner has looked smooth so far on his way to his third major final in a calendar year, as the Italian star has lost just one set so far. In the semifinals, Sinner made easy work of American Ben Shelton, winning in straight sets. After winning the U.S. Open just a few months ago, Sinner is trying to become the first man since Novak Djokovic four years ago to win back-to-back championships in Melbourne.
On the other side, Zverev is coming off a semifinal clash with Djokovic, though it didn’t quite go as many were hoping. The 24-time Grand Slam champion had to retire after the first set, giving Zverev a direct path to the final.
The German star had been having to battle through the field in the second week, needing four sets in both his Round of 16 and quarterfinal matches. Yet, Zverev was strong enough to pull through, carving a path to his third Grand Slam final appearance.
Zverev is looking for his first major, having lost in the U.S. Open final in 2017 and last year’s French Open.
This will be the fourth Grand Slam meeting between Sinner and Zverev, and third on a hard court. Sinner beat Zverev in the 2020 French Open, though the German has won matchups in the 2021 and 2023 U.S. Opens.
