The Dallas Cowboys have made a significant decision regarding their coaching staff. Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer has reached an agreement with the Cowboys to become the team's next head coach. This announcement was made by the organization on Friday.

Schottenheimer, 51, has been a part of the Cowboys' coaching staff for the past three seasons, taking on the role of offensive coordinator since 2023. While former head coach Mike McCarthy handled the playcalling duties over the last couple of years, Schottenheimer's promotion coincided with quarterback Dak Prescott's standout performance.

Prescott had an impressive 2023 season, finishing second in MVP voting and leading the league in passing touchdowns. This success contributed to the Cowboys' third consecutive 12-5 season. However, the team faced a setback in 2024, finishing with a disappointing 7-10 record.

With Prescott, who will be 32 at the start of the 2025 season, recovering from a hamstring injury that sidelined him for the latter part of 2024, Schottenheimer will be tasked with guiding him back to peak form. Additionally, Schottenheimer will work towards enhancing the overall performance of the Cowboys' roster.

The decision to part ways with McCarthy was announced on Jan. 13, just before his contract was set to expire. This move made the Cowboys one of seven teams with a head coaching vacancy this offseason. Despite missing out on interviewing some top candidates early on, such as Mike Vrabel and Ben Johnson, the Cowboys ultimately decided on promoting Schottenheimer.

Although there were rumors of other potential candidates, including former Cowboys star Deion Sanders and ex-Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, Schottenheimer's extensive experience as an offensive assistant coach for nearly three decades made him a suitable choice for the role.
