19-year-old Learner Tien pulled off a massive heist after beating World No.5 Daniil Medvedev in the second round of the men’s singles at the Australian Open 2025. On Thursday, January 16, the teenage sensation took four hours and 48 minutes to beat Medvedev 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (8-10), 1-6, 7-6 (10-7) at the Margaret Court Arena.
Medvedev, who finished as the runner-up last time around after losing to World No.1 Jannik Sinner, looked out of sorts throughout his clash against Tien. Medvedev got out of jail against Kasidit Samrej, and he tried to come back with his back against the wall, but could not have the last laugh. Tien became the youngest American to beat an ATP top five player in a major since 1990. He also became the youngest man from the United States to go through to the third round at Melbourne Park since Pete Sampras in 1990.
