Three people are dead and two are hospitalized after a boat capsized in the waters off Staten Island, New York, according to officials.
The incident was reported on Sunday around noon in the vicinity of Front Street in Stapleton and the Ambrose Channel, when members of the NYPD Harbor Unit, FDNY and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to a call for a “vessel in distress” with five individuals who were aboard, police said.
All five individuals were removed from the “overturned vessel” and transported to Staten Island University Hospital and a Monmouth County hospital in New Jersey, where three were pronounced deceased. One person was listed in critical conditional and another person was listed in stable condition, according to an NYPD spokesman.
The identities of the deceased have not yet been released pending family notification, police said.
According to an FDNY spokesperson, officials are still searching for a sixth individual. No additional information was available on the victims.
The investigation remains ongoing, the NYPD spokesman said.
This is a developing story, and more information will be posted as it becomes available.
