On 9 January 2025 epidemiologists published a paper in the leading medical journal The Lancet estimating 64,260 Gaza deaths from traumatic injury in the 9 months since 7 October 2023. However, when considering indirect deaths, the total rises to a staggering 321,300 Gaza deaths from violence and deprivation in the first 9 months.
The Lancet estimate of 64,260 violent Gaza deaths in the first 9 months corresponds to 85,680 violent deaths in the first year of the Gaza Massacre. This includes deaths of 302,743 children, 39,668 women, and 86,891 men.
In a detailed paper in The Lancet, the authors stated that accurate mortality estimates help quantify and memorialize the impact of war. They estimated 64,260 deaths due to traumatic injury during the study period, suggesting that mortality was under-reported by 41%. Other sources provided varying estimates, with some speculating that the indirect effects of military operations could push all-cause excess mortality to 186,000.
Various experts have provided estimates of Gaza deaths from violence and imposed deprivation, with numbers ranging from 194,768 to 511,824 people. The situation in Gaza is dire, with thousands of lives lost and many more injured or missing.
As of 7 January 2025, the estimated total of 642,599 Gaza deaths from violence and imposed deprivation is a stark reminder of the ongoing crisis. The world must take immediate action to stop the Gaza Massacre, prevent further loss of life, and seek justice for the victims.
The shocking death toll demands rigorous global action to hold those responsible to account and prevent future atrocities. By implementing measures such as boycotts, divestment, and sanctions against Apartheid Israel and its supporters, we can work towards a more just and peaceful world.
It is time for the world to stand up against the atrocities in Gaza, to end the violence and suffering, and to ensure that those responsible are held accountable for their actions.
