Six Arrested as Police Expand Investigation Beyond State Borders
Twelve people have tragically lost their lives after reportedly consuming spurious liquor in Amritsar’s Majitha area, as confirmed by officials on Tuesday. The victims include three youths each from Bhangali and Marrari Kalan villages, and two from Threawal village.
Police officials have expressed concern that the death toll may increase, as several others are in critical condition. An investigation has been launched by the Majitha police to determine the source of the illicit liquor.
The deceased individuals have been identified as Major Singh (alias Modu), Paramjit Singh (alias Pamma), Sarbjit Singh (alias Shabba), and Tasveer Singh (alias Sikandar Singh) from Marrari Kalan village; Joginder Singh (alias Manna), Karnail Singh (alias Mahant), and Jeeta (alias Siti) from Threawal; and Balbir Singh, Ramandeep Singh, and Romanjit Singh (alias Romi) from Bhangali Kalan.
Majitha SHO Aabtaab Singh stated, “Preliminary investigation indicates that they all consumed liquor from a single source on Sunday evening. Some of them passed away on Monday morning, and locals cremated them without notifying the police. We were informed about the liquor-related deaths later in the evening and immediately launched an investigation.”
Authorities have revealed that Prabhjit Singh, the main supplier in the area, was one of the individuals apprehended. Sahib Singh, identified as the kingpin of the illicit liquor distribution network, was captured in Rajasansi. Additionally, four others who had procured liquor from the kingpin and distributed it to villages have also been taken into custody.
Police teams have expanded their search beyond state borders to apprehend businesses suspected of supplying the illegal liquor. In response to the incident, Amritsar Deputy Commissioner Shakshi Sawhney, accompanied by law enforcement officials, visited Marari Kalan village.
