Interim Government Aims for Strong Ties Despite Challenges
London, Jun 12 (PTI) - Bangladesh Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus expressed the interim government's desire for good relations with India, but acknowledged challenges during an interaction with Chatham House think tank director Bronwen Maddox in London on Wednesday.
Yunus addressed a wide range of issues including bilateral ties with India and the democratic roadmap for the country, starting with a “July Charter” next month.
During the discussion, Yunus highlighted the importance of a legal and proper extradition process for deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, emphasizing the goal of building the best possible relationship with India as a neighboring country.
However, Yunus also expressed concerns about misinformation and fake news originating from the Indian press, impacting the relationship between the two nations.
Despite the challenges, Yunus emphasized the need for a peaceful coexistence to pursue the dreams of the Bangladeshi people.
On the issue of Hasina's social media activities, Yunus revealed his conversation with Prime Minister Modi, seeking assistance in managing her online presence to avoid further tensions within Bangladesh.
The strained ties between India and Bangladesh following Hasina's ouster were discussed, with Yunus outlining plans for national elections by the first half of 2026.
Yunus, a Nobel Laureate, ruled out the possibility of joining the elected government, emphasizing his current role in the interim government.
During his visit to the UK, Yunus faced protests from members of Hasina's Awami League party but is scheduled to meet with senior British officials.
