Ministry of Home Affairs directs enhanced security measures for key officials
The Ministry of Home Affairs has instructed Delhi Police to step up security for External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar, as per sources on Wednesday. The move comes amidst escalating tensions in the region.
The Delhi Police has swiftly acted on the directive by bolstering Dr Jaishankar's security detail. A special bulletproof car has been included in his security protocol, and surveillance has been intensified around his residence.
The security evaluation extends to other prominent figures, including Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and several BJP leaders such as Union Ministers and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. These decisions were made during a high-level meeting chaired by Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora last Sunday.
Dr Jaishankar currently enjoys Z-category security, which entails round-the-clock protection by a team of 33 CRPF commandos. This elevated security arrangement reflects the gravity of the current situation.
The recent security measures are a response to heightened tensions between India and Pakistan. The conflict escalated following Pakistan's retaliatory strikes on Indian targets in response to India's anti-terror operations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on May 7.
Operation Sindoor, carried out by India on the same day, was a retaliatory move in response to the tragic Pahalgam terror attack that claimed the lives of 26 individuals.
The Z-category security cover is the third-highest security level in India, featuring 22 security personnel, including NSG commandos and local police officers. This level of protection is typically reserved for high-profile figures facing serious threats.
Dr Jaishankar's security classification was upgraded from Y to Z category back in October 2023, following intelligence reports highlighting potential risks to his safety.
His security team, at that time, comprised 12 armed guards at his residence, six PSOs, 12 armed commandos on rotating shifts, surveillance personnel, and trained drivers, all ensuring his safety 24/7.
