Union Personnel Ministry Order Confirms New Appointment
Former defence secretary Ajay Kumar has been appointed as the chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) as per a Union Personnel Ministry order issued on Tuesday. This appointment comes after the completion of Preeti Sudan's tenure on April 29.
Kumar's appointment was approved by President Droupadi Murmu, as stated in the official order. He is a 1985-batch retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the Kerala cadre. Kumar previously served as the defence secretary from August 23, 2019, to October 31, 2022, according to his service records.
The UPSC, responsible for conducting civil services examinations to select officers for prestigious roles like the IAS, Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and Indian Police Service (IPS), is led by a chairman and has a maximum of 10 members. Currently, there are two vacant member positions within the commission.
A UPSC chairman serves a term of six years or until reaching the age of 65, showcasing the importance and stability of this key position in the commission.
