Israeli bombardment from the air, land, and sea continues to be reported across the Gaza Strip, resulting in further civilian casualties, displacement, and destruction of civilian infrastructure. In the North Gaza governorate, the Israeli military has been carrying out a ground offensive since 6 October 2024, with fighting reported between Israeli forces and Palestinian armed groups. Rocket fire by Palestinian armed groups towards Israel was also reported.
Humanitarian Needs and Challenges
On his first visit to the Middle East as Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Tom Fletcher highlighted the challenges facing humanitarian workers in Gaza. The Israeli authorities continue to deny meaningful access, making it almost impossible to deliver essential aid.
Deadliest Incidents Reported
Between 17 and 23 December, several deadly incidents were reported, including attacks on houses sheltering internally displaced persons and schools designated as IDP shelters. The situation at various hospitals has also drastically deteriorated due to ongoing attacks.
Food Insecurity and Health Crisis
Food security continues to deteriorate in central and southern Gaza, with limited access to essential supplies. Medical organizations like Médecins Sans Frontières and International Medical Corps face challenges in delivering critical medications and equipment.
Mental Health and Disease Outbreaks
The mental health conditions in Gaza have worsened significantly due to continuous bombardment and displacement. Infectious diseases are spreading rapidly due to overcrowding and lack of hygiene. Pregnant women and newborns are particularly vulnerable.
Access to Aid and Humanitarian Challenges
Despite efforts to coordinate aid movements, many requests for access to besieged areas are denied or face impediments. The lack of medical supplies, equipment, and essential items poses a severe threat to the population in Gaza.
