The Joint Parliamentary Committee constituted to examine the Waqf Amendment Bill cleared the proposed legislation on Monday adopting all amendments proposed by the ruling BJP-led NDA members and negating every change moved by opposition members.
Following the meeting, the committee chairman Jagdambika Pal told reporters that amendments adopted by the committee will make the law better and more effective, reported PTI.
However, MPs from the opposition camp decried the meeting's proceedings and accused Pal of "subverting" the democratic process.
Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee alleged that they were not heard. "It was a farcical exercise. We were not heard. Pal has acted in a dictatorial manner," said the TMC MP.
Pal rejected the allegation saying the entire exercise was democratic, and the majority view prevailed.
