Jean-Marie Le Pen, the founder of France’s far-right National Rally party, passed away at the age of 96. Known for his controversial political career, Le Pen made a lasting impact on French politics and beyond.

Political Career

Le Pen established the National Rally, formerly known as the National Front, in 1972. He led the party until 2011 and ran for president five times. His most notable electoral success came in 2002 when he advanced to the second round, shocking France by defeating the Socialist candidate before ultimately losing to Jacques Chirac.

Controversies

Throughout his career, Le Pen faced numerous legal troubles due to his inflammatory statements. He was convicted for downplaying the Holocaust, praising France’s collaborationist Vichy government, and making racist remarks about the Roma community. His provocative rhetoric led to fines and convictions for inciting hatred and discrimination.

Family and Succession

Le Pen had three daughters, with Marine Le Pen eventually taking over the National Rally in 2011. Despite being named the party's honorary president, Jean-Marie was expelled in 2015 as part of Marine's efforts to distance the party from its extremist roots. His daughter successfully adapted his far-right message for a wider audience and achieved significant electoral success.

Legacy

Jean-Marie Le Pen is credited with pioneering a form of far-right extremist politics in Europe that influenced other populist leaders worldwide. His daughter Marine has continued his legacy, receiving a historic share of the vote in the 2022 French presidential election.
