Gaetz resigned from Congress on Nov. 13 after President-elect Donald Trump nominated him for attorney general. He later withdrew his name from consideration due to lack of Senate confirmation votes. In December, the House Committee on Ethics released a report alleging Gaetz's involvement in illegal drug use and inappropriate relationships.
Gubernatorial Aspirations
Despite these controversies, Gaetz is eyeing the GOP gubernatorial nomination in 2026 when Gov. Ron DeSantis is term-limited. Gaetz aims to address issues like skyrocketing homeowner insurance premiums and position himself as a pro-consumer candidate within the Republican party.
Challenges and Contenders
Before announcing his candidacy, Gaetz consulted with his wife and prayed about the decision. Other potential Republican candidates for governor include Reps. Byron Donalds, former Mayor Ashton Hayward, and Miami Mayor Francis Suarez. State Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez and Attorney General Ashley Moody are also considered strong contenders.
Future Plans
Despite the ethics report's allegations, Gaetz remains undeterred, citing past election victories despite similar accusations. Since leaving office, he has pursued new ventures like Cameo and a show on OANN. Gaetz's entry into the gubernatorial race could introduce a new dynamic to Florida politics.
