Trump directs government to expand the notorious former prison on Alcatraz Island
New York (AP) - President Donald Trump announced on his Truth Social site that he is directing the government to reopen and expand Alcatraz, the infamous former prison located on a remote California island that has been closed for over 60 years.
Trump stated, "For too long, America has been plagued by vicious criminals who only bring misery and suffering. Reopening Alcatraz will symbolize law, order, and justice."
The prison, known as "The Rock," housed notorious criminals like Al Capone and George “Machine Gun” Kelly. Despite its reputation for being inescapable, only a few inmates attempted escapes, and most were caught or perished in the attempt.
Alcatraz Island, now a popular tourist destination, was closed in 1963 due to deteriorating infrastructure and high operational costs. The Bureau of Prisons has stated that they will comply with the President's order, but questions remain about the feasibility of reopening such a facility.
Trump's directive comes amidst his efforts to address criminality, including clashes with courts over sending accused gang members to foreign prisons and the opening of detention centers in Guantanamo Bay.
The Bureau of Prisons has faced scrutiny in recent years following high-profile incidents like Jeffrey Epstein's suicide and reports of criminal activity and abuse within its facilities.
