The Supreme Court has announced that it will appoint an independent observer for the upcoming Chandigarh mayoral polls scheduled for January 30. The court has emphasized the need for a fair electoral process and has stated that the entire process will be conducted in the presence of the observer and will be videographed to ensure transparency.
Chandigarh Mayor, Kuldeep Kumar, had approached the Supreme Court with a plea to direct the UT Administration to conduct the Chandigarh Mayoral election using a 'show of hands' method instead of a 'secret ballot'. Kumar's aim is to ensure fairness and integrity in the election process.
A Bench led by Justice Surya Kant has issued a notice to the Chandigarh Administration, requesting a response to Kumar's petition. The petition also calls for the appointment of an independent observer to oversee the elections and ensure they are conducted freely and fairly. The matter has been scheduled for a hearing today.
The Bench, which also includes Justice N Kotiswar Singh, has indicated the possibility of appointing a retired judge to supervise the election process. It has been made clear that the election process will proceed as planned, with the observer playing a key role in ensuring transparency and fairness.
