Court to Hear Plea Challenging FIR Order on May 16
New Delhi, May 15 (PTI) - The Supreme Court on Thursday questioned Madhya Pradesh minister Vijay Shah for his controversial remarks targeting Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, directing an FIR against him. The court will hear his plea on May 16, as mentioned for urgent listing before a bench comprising Chief Justice B R Gavai and Justice Augustine George Masih.
"What sort of statements are you making? You are a responsible minister of the government," the CJI told Shah's counsel, as the lawyer sought a stay on the FIR. The bench scheduled the plea to be heard on Friday.
Shah made headlines after a viral video showed him allegedly making objectionable remarks against Col Qureshi, known for her role alongside Wing Commander Vyomika Singh during media briefings on Operation Sindoor. The Madhya Pradesh High Court criticized Shah for his "scurrilous" remarks and "language of the gutters," ordering an FIR on charges of promoting enmity and hatred.
The high court took suo motu cognizance of the statements, directing the police to file an FIR against the minister. Following backlash, Shah expressed willingness to apologize, stating his respect for Col Qureshi surpasses even that for his sister.
