The city of New Orleans in the state of Louisiana was struck by a tragic event on New Year's Eve when a man, who was driving a car, plowed into a crowd.

As a result of the tragic incident, at least 10 people were killed, and 35 were injured. According to a statement from the New Orleans Police Department, the perpetrator appeared to have deliberately targeted the crowd.

"It was a deliberate act driven by malicious intent, and this has caused devastation," said a witness, who was shocked to see the suspect ram two police officers and then flee the scene.

According to CNN, the suspect is currently in custody.

The tragedy occurred in the heart of New Orleans' French Quarter around 3:15 a.m. In this area, known for its vibrant music bars and bustling tourist spots.

Witnesses report that the vehicle sped into the crowd on Bourbon Street and then accelerated away from the scene. The police responded by opening a controlled fire.

Images captured at the scene show a white Ford pickup truck involved in the incident.

Following the incident, the FBI agent Alexia Duncan's statement revealed that an explosive device was also found at the scene of the tragedy. Authorities are now investigating whether this device was related to the attack.

New Orleans Mayor Latoya Cantrell has labeled the incident as a "terrorist act."
