The toll of violence in Sudan is devastating. The Sudanese Red Crescent reported 2,000 bodies in a single day, with U.N. investigators estimating up to 15,000 deaths in Geneina alone. More than three million people have fled Sudan, including hundreds of thousands living in overcrowded camps in Chad.

Genocide Determination and Response

The U.S. government deliberated for months before officially recognizing the atrocities in Sudan as genocide. Despite some hesitation due to potential political repercussions, Secretary of State Antony Blinken signed off on the determination while traveling in Asia. While this finding does not mandate action, sanctions have been imposed to add teeth to the measure.

Call for Accountability

Experts believe that the genocide determination may spark a new push for accountability in a conflict that has claimed as many as 150,000 lives. U.S. envoy to Sudan, Tom Perriello, emphasized the importance of holding perpetrators responsible for their actions.
