Tragic incident during late-night vehicle check leads to casualties and arrests
A woman Constable was killed and two other on-duty officers were injured after being rammed by a speeding SUV in Patna during a late-night vehicle check, an official said. The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday during a special night vehicle checking campaign on Atal Path near the Srikrishna Puri locality in Patna.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Avkash Kumar said that two individuals, including the SUV driver, have been arrested and the vehicle has been seized for further investigation, as reported by IANS. SSP Avkash Kumar added that two suspects are currently being questioned, and a case of rash and negligent driving has been registered against them.
The incident took place when a police team signalled a speeding SUV to stop for a check. But, instead of stopping the vehicle, the driver rammed into three policemen present at the checkpoint. The collision was so strong that all three personnel were thrown in the air and fell several meters away.
A video of the incident, which is now in wide circulation on social media, shows one cop bleeding heavily with an injury to his head and the SUV coming to a stop with damage to its bonnet. The injured policemen, Sub-Inspector Deepak Kumar, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Awadhesh Kumar and Constable Komal Kumari were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared Komal dead during treatment on Thursday morning, IANS reported.
The SUV driver and another youth named Ashok were also injured in the incident and were admitted to a nearby hospital along with the policemen. The SSP assured that the matter is being thoroughly investigated and the vehicle is being thoroughly examined, as reported by IANS.
For the past few days, Patna Police has been conducting aggressive vehicle checking drives in the district to prevent criminal activities as well as road accidents.
